Biometrics
One of the major challenges for any National ID system is ensuring the accuracy of the database information. How accurate are the records within the databases? How easy is it to cheat the system and obtain a fraudulent ID? How can National databases be built with solid integrity?
So what is the real benefit of Biometrics to the National ID industry?
- Biometrics ensures that persons will only be enrolled one time into the database, preventing fraud of multiple identities; and
- Biometrics cannot be forgotten, lost, lent or stolen like PINs (Personal Identification Number), passwords and keys; and
- The user's anatomy itself becomes the means of identification, the biological password.

Magna™ ,OTI’s National Registry Management System and Biometrics
It is self evident that only through reliable Biometrics can one authenticate a person’s identity.
This is why OTI introduces the perfect software platform, Magna™ , which integrates biometrics in its offered End-to-End solution. Following are Magna™’s characteristics while provided with Biometrics:
Magna™ - Integrates different Biometric Identifiers, such as finger prints, Face Recognition, Hand geometry, Iris Scanning, from Enrollment to Document Issuing and Document Use in the field.
Magna™ - Utilizes both 1:1 Verification, and 1:N Identification search methods (AFIS).
Magna™ - Performs enrollment, and ensures biometric data quality – so identity stored in the system its quality approved before stored. Once approved, the biometric information can be used to verify the person’s identity in all future encounters.
Magna™ - Performs Verification & Identification tests, during which biometric information is detected and compared with the stored information.
Magna™ - Has built in interfaces with world leading biometric system vendors. It is robust and supports many millions of database entries.
Magna™ includes the framework for integration of additional recognition and identification techniques.
Magna™ - integrates Biometrics in national ID project, to law enforcement, and commercial.
Magna™ also integrates all the latest technologies in biometrics, such as:
-Multiple Biometric Engine Integration
-Web-based Identification
-Advanced Image Processing
-Smart Cards/Mobile Identification/Authentication Biometrics – Primary steps
There are three primary steps involved when utilizing biometrics in a security or identification program, these are known as: Enrollment, Verification and Identification.
Enrollment refers to the process of capturing the unique biometric identifier at the time of personal data collection and building a central database, before document or security clearance issuance.
1 to 1 (1:1) Verification - Matching to a specific record on a credential or in a database is known as 1 to 1 (1:1) matching.
1 to Many (1:N) Identification - Checking a "live" biometric template against a large database with the purpose of finding out if there is a potential match, is known as 1 to many (1:N) matching, or searching. Biometric Identifiers
Overall, Fingerprint/AFIS, Facial Recognition/FR, and Iris Scanning are the most widely used technologies in the space due to their ease of use, relatively high match rates, flexibility, strong cost-benefit profile, and security.
Voice recognition and hand geometry technology have also been applied in numerous situations, though their use relative to face, finger, and iris applications is expected to decline. Nor are they suitable for use in “1:N” systems.
